A large and decorative Late 19th Century Antique Japanese Meiji Period Satsuma Vase, the overall decoration of courtiers and samurai a riot of colour. The whole in a traditional Satsuma palette heightened with gilding, this now, after almost 140 years, rather tired and distressed in places, notably on the handles and rims of the piece. Unmarked.

FAQs

Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of southern Kyushu during the late sixteenth century. By the Meiji period, production expanded significantly to cater to Western trade, featuring intricate hand-painted enamels, gilding, and figurative compositions.

Satsuma ceramics are formed from low-fired earthenware featuring a ivory-toned glaze with fine surface crackle. Decoration is applied using multi-coloured overglaze enamels and gold leaf or paint, often featuring relief detailing.

Authentic pieces display a distinct yellowish or cream ground with uniform micro-crackling throughout the glaze. Look for hand-painted detail in the enamel work, detailed gold ornamentation, and historic maker marks or signatures on the base.

These decorative vessels function well as statement pieces on sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside display cabinets. The rich polychrome palette and gilded accents complement both traditional interiors and minimalist contemporary schemes.
