Fine Regency Mahogany Sofa Table, Circa 1810

19th century
Description

A fantastic Regency mahogany and ebony inlaid sofa table. A testament to the grandeur of its time, the table boasts a polished top, adorned with two functional frieze drawers, perfect for stowing away your cherished items. The artistry continues with two matching dummy drawers at the rear, a clever design that maintains the table’s symmetrical allure.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the early 19th century in Britain, sofa tables were crafted to sit behind or alongside a sofa, featuring drop leaves at either end and shallow frieze drawers to accommodate reading, writing, or tea service.

Cabinetmakers favoured high-grade Cuban mahogany and rosewood, frequently incorporating ebony or boxwood line inlay, hand-dovetailed drawer linings, and solid brass hardware including lion paw castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship such as irregular hand-cut dovetails, original brass castors secured with period steel screws, hand-planed undersides, and natural age patination on the timber.

Position the table directly behind a sofa, along a hallway wall as a console, or beneath a window, pairing dark timber tones with contemporary lighting and structured decorative ceramics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfiber cloth, apply beeswax sparingly once or twice a year along the timber grain, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
