Rare Silver Charles I English Provincial Seal Top Spoon Southampton Area C1648

£1,950    $2,393    €2,324
A cracking example of a Charles I Wessex made English Provincial silver spoon. Struck in the bowl with a Rose mark ascribed to Southampton and illustrated on page 277 of Jackson, Ian Pickford edition. Fig shape bowl and slightly tapering hexagonal stem with a lap joint. Seal top bears a close resemblance to ‘Typical Salisbury “Group A” castings’ illustrated in fig 64 page 38 of ‘West Country Silver Spoons and their Makers 1550 – 1750’ by Timothy Arthur Kent. Prick dot initials I.O over F on the plate with the date 1648. A pleasing tactile spoon with a nice colour in all original condition – I have not cleaned it

Dimensions: 180m. 50.7g
