Rare Silver Charles II English Provincial Seal Top Spoon Salisbury C1660
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Carlyon Silver
A really good Charles II English provincial seal top silver spoon with a cast silver-gilt vase shape extended seal which has a wide nimbus with betrothal prick dot initials I.B over I.S and the date 1660, joined to the stem with a lap joint. Struck with a pelleted mark in the bowl and on the stem, the stem also with two fleur de lis marks. The spoon can be attributed with some confidence to Salisbury, the evidence for this is found in ‘Salisbury silver and its makers 1550 to 1700’ by Timothy Arthur Kent. The pelleted circle mark crops up in various forms on Salisbury early spoons, two with variations on this mark and very similar seal tops are illustrated on pages 17 and 28, and Kent makes reference to the fleur de lis mark as found on Salisbury early spoons on page 48. A good weighty tactile spoon in all original condition with a pleasing colour - I have not cleaned it.
