Antique Original Victorian Ladder Back Fireside Rocking Chair C1880

19th century
Description

Antique Victorian Ladder Back Rocking chair .

An original Rocking chair with a beautifully worn patina.

We bring to you this charming example of a Victorian 19th century ladder back rocking chair in lovely original condition made from Fruitwood and Birch. This rocking chair of moderate proportions features its original nicely time-worn dark French polished finish with lots of patina and character and has not been stripped like many others have. This comfortable chair is ideal as a fireside chair in any period themed property. The chair has a nicely shaped and curved back ladder back with curved endings to the back rails descending to curved arms on turned risers and a sculpted seat. The chair sits on typically Victorian turned legs with stretchers which finishes to long curved rocker rails. The chair is in strong condition with no joint movement or breaks and has been thoroughly checked over in our workshop. We have cleaned and waxed this chair to protect and preserve the finish making this item completely ready for its new home. Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian ladder-back rocking chair is a traditional wooden seat from the late 19th century featuring horizontal back slats framed between two upright posts, set upon curved wooden rockers for rhythmic movement.

These chairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, beech, or ash, often finished with natural wax or spirit varnish to highlight the timber grain.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-turned spindles, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in symmetry from manual crafting, and natural surface patination along areas of frequent hand contact.

An antique rocking chair serves as an accent piece near a fireplace, reading nook, or bedroom corner, introducing organic warm wood tones that contrast effectively against minimalist contemporary decor.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply beeswax polish periodically to preserve the original wood finish.
