Fine Fereghan Rug, West Persia, Circa 1880, 2.10m X 1.33m

19th century
Description

Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, this is a very elegant Persian rug from the famous Fereghan weaving district. Woven on a cotton foundation with very fine velvety wool with a low clipped pile. The dyes are quite exquisite, from the sapphire blue field to the secondary colours green, yellow and pink. Note also, the two different shades of red used in the medallion and spandrels, an unusual and interesting feature. The fineness of the weave has enabled the designer and the weaver to create a beautiful rendering of the classic design. The medallion is jewel-like and appears to be floating above the field which is decorated with the classical Herati design. The spandrels, are quartered versions of the medallion but , as mentioned, with a different shade of red. The field is framed by a very lovely palmette border so often seen on Fereghan rugs. In fact the entire composition is quite delightful and benefits from having a low clipped pile which enhances the definition of the design. Cherished through the generations, this rug has survived in very good condition with even pile throughout and minimal repairs. The original ends and selvages are intact. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fereghan rugs originate from the Farahan district in West Persia, produced predominantly during the nineteenth century. They are characterized by fine knotting, tightly clipped wool pile, and stylized floral or Herati patterns arranged around central medallions or structured fields.

Traditional Fereghan textiles feature hand-spun wool pile tied onto a cotton warp and weft structure using asymmetric knots. Natural plant extracts and minerals were used to dye the wool, resulting in rich indigo blues, madder reds, and soft secondary shades.

Authenticity is indicated by natural dye abrashsubtle colour variations across the pilealongside asymmetrical hand-knotting visible on the reverse. Woven pieces from this period exhibit precise design execution, a flat hand-finished profile, and consistent handle.

An antique Persian rug serves as a foundational element, anchoring polished timber floors, mahogany writing desks, or modern neutral upholstery. The dark blues and terracotta tones complement classical wood finishes as well as contemporary architectural interiors.

To preserve wool fibres, vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush bar. Rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear, protect it from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and utilize a quality underlay to maintain pile structure.
