This beautiful late 18th-century French School oil painting depicts a lady wearing a Robe ą l''Anglaise and holding roses.
 
Intended as a conveyance of love, this gentle portrayal was probably created for a potential suitor. A portrait commissioned by her family in expectation of an appropriate match.
 
The roses carry symbolic overtones as per the rules of ‘floriography’, a popular topic of conversation. Several books were written on the subject with the significance of every flower meticulously described. Ladies were keen to demonstrate their understanding by carefully curating their posies.
 
The inclusion of red and white roses is a reference to unity, a bond between souls.
