Enamel Portrait of Hrh Prince Charlotte by Henry Pierce Bone

19th century
Description

*

Shown amongst darkening clouds, this is a poignant memorial portrait of Princess Charlotte of Wales.

*

Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796-1817) was the only child of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick. Her parents separated very soon after her birth and, as a result, Charlotte was brought up by governesses and saw little of her parents especially her mother. She married Prince Léopold of Saxe-Coburg and tragically died in childbirth at the age of 21 leading to a period of unprecedented public mourning. Had she outlived her grandfather and father, Princess Charlotte would have become Queen of England.

*

Enamel on copper, the portrait is unsigned but is attributed to the hand of Henry Pierce Bone. In fine condition, it is set in a gilt metal frame with canted corners.

*

Born in 1779, Henry Pierce helped out in his father’s enamelling studio from an early age. Having trained at the RA Schools, he forged a successful career copying portraits in enamel and was appointed enamel painter to the Queen, Princess Victoria and Prince Albert.

*

Framed Size: 102 x 91mm max.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An enamel portrait miniature is a small-scale portrait created by firing vitreous enamel pigments onto a metal base, typically copper or gold. Popular during the Georgian and Regency eras, this medium produces permanent, non-fading colour compared to traditional watercolour on ivory.

Artisans applied ground glass metallic oxides onto thin metal plates, firing the piece in a furnace multiple times for each colour layer. Frames were commonly crafted from brass, pinchbeck, or low-karat gold with engine-turned or chased border designs.

Authentic pieces display smooth, vitreous surfaces without brushstroke texture and show subtle signs of hand-firing under magnification. The reverse often features a plain enamel backing coat, known as counter-enamelling, to prevent warping during firing.

Miniatures are frequently displayed in gallery wall arrangements, mounted within shadow boxes, or positioned on desk trays and mantelpieces alongside books and decorative objects.

Enamel pieces should be kept away from extreme temperature shifts and physical impact, as the glass surface can chip. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid chemical solvents or moisture on the metal frame.
