Large Wwii Treen Fire Guard Compass (with A Hidden Secret)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Robert Parfett Antiques
A large World War 2 wooden compass used by the fire service to to show where the latest incidents were located, bomb explosions, fires etc on a large scale map of the area. It is an interesting object in its own right, but what is particularly fascinating is what was used to hold the pencil in place. The little scrap of paper (included with the compass) is an extract from a letter which reveals more about its history.
It refers to a Mr. Sesnan who was on fire guard duty at Claremont, in Darlington during the war and previously had been living at 54 Brook Street and was registered as a locomotive driver in the 1939 census.
In very good antique condition. Opens and closes well.
