Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, folding card and tea tables were created for formal drawing rooms to accommodate popular social pastimes, including tea service and card games such as whist. Designed to fold flat against a wall when not in use, these multi-functional pieces evolved from simple drop-leaf designs into highly refined, inlaid furniture during the late Georgian and Regency eras.

These tables were primarily constructed using Cuban or West Indian mahogany for the primary exterior surfaces, often accented with boxwood, ebony, or satinwood stringing inlay. Secondary woods such as pine, oak, or chestnut were commonly utilised for internal framing and drawer linings.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hinges, and evidence of hand-planed secondary timbers on the underside. Look for age-appropriate wear around the fold-over mechanism, turned or tapered leg profiles typical of the period, and natural shrinkage marks along the timber grain.

When closed, the table functions effectively as a narrow console table along an entrance hallway, in a dining room, or behind a sofa. When unfolded, it serves as an accent desk, games table, or display surface for decorative objects and table lamps.

Apply high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, rubbing gently along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme changes in humidity to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting.
