Early C19th George IV period figured rosewood sewing or work table in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
High quality bow-ended rectangular sewing table of free-standing form , fitted with a shallow mahogany-lined frieze drawer above a pull-out solid box or ‘bag’ compartment . Fitted with a circular brass escutcheon, original lock and key which operates and locks both the drawer and the box simultaneously . The waist edge with carved elongated ‘bead and reel’ type moulding .
Raised on twin carved and ring-turned end supports with a central circular carved boss and having applied paterae detail , joined by a lateral turned stretcher. The shaped splayed legs fitted with well-patinated ‘bronzed’ shapely scrolled brass box-toe castors .
The shaped trapezoidal box compartment covered ,and also lined , in old rose-pink self-patterned silk taffeta , although having some historic marks and wear , highly-serviceable and being complimentary to the colour of the timber .
Highly figured rosewood with a rich colour and patina having original polished surface .
In excellent original condition , the design and quality leading to a strong attribution to the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster .
