Herbert Dicksee "Who Goes There?" Scottish Terrier Etching

Description

Herbert Thomas Dicksee was a British painter born in 1862. He was best known for his sensitive depictions of animals including dogs, lions and tigers. Dicksee’s family was well-ingrained into the art world; his father was an artist and his nephew, Sir Frank Dicksee, was the president of the Royal Academy in London from 1924–1928. Herbert went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London on a scholarship, and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. Many of Dicksee’s most famous works were transcribed into prints and etchings published by Klackner of London. He died on February 20, 1942 in Hampstead, England.

"Who Goes There...?" is a good example of the 1st state artist's proof etching on vellum. Showing a Scottish Terrier it measures 17"x 16", is signed lower left in pencil and is in the original rosewood frame giving an overall size of 27"x 25". It was published in 1916 by Frost & Reed.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, canine portraiture gained immense popularity in Britain, driven by public interest in purebred dogs and print collecting. Artists such as Herbert Dicksee specialized in detailed etchings of dogs, which were published as limited edition prints for domestic display.

Traditional etchings were created by drawing an image onto a wax-coated metal plate with an etching needle, then submerging the plate in acid to bite lines into the exposed metal. Ink was applied to the incised grooves and transferred to dampened paper under heavy pressure using a rolling press.
