Fine C19th French ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze study of “‘Diane de Gabii” , or Diana of Gabies , after the antique.
 
Superb quality casting of the iconic statue of the goddess Diana or Artemis , depicted robing . The original antique marble study attributed to the Greek sculptor Praxiteles , was discovered in 1792 by Gavin Hamilton at the property of Prince Borghese at Gabii near Rome , Italy . In 1807 , due to financial difficulties the Prince sold the statue from his collection to Napoleon who transported it to Paris , where it remains on exhibition today in the Louvre Museum.
 
The Roman goddess of the hunt , moon and birthing , Diana was known to the Greeks as Artemis .
 
Excellent original condition with a wonderful ‘chocolate’ colour and patina . Signed in script to side of base “Museé du Louvre” .
