Fabulous large late 19th.c. gilt mirror c.1880. Measuring six feet from top to bottom. Original 31'' x 38½'' oval mirror plate. Within a gilded frame with multiple bands of moulded detail. Topped with an exceptional pierced gesso frieze, angled so as to stand well proud of the wall and featuring a large scallop shell flanked with scrolling acanthus leaves and draped with a garland of flowers. Repeated as a smaller version at the bottom of the frame. Retaining the original gilding aged to a lovely mellow gold colour and rubbed though in places to reveal the red ground below. Excellent condition with just a few very minor missing portions of gesso and retouching. Original backboards.
