Fine Turkish Silk Rug, Mid-20th Century, 1.93m X 1.29m

1940 - 1960
Description

Dating to the mid-20th century, this fine silk rug bridges the gap between the famous Kum Kapi silk rugs woven by the Armenian masters such as Zareh and Toussounian in the early 20th century, and the later commercial production associated with Hereke and Kayseri. I have hesitated to attribute our piece to a location, but the workmanship marks it as closely related to the Istanbul Kum Kapi rugs. The so-called 'Sultan's Head' design, dominated by a very architectural niche, is inspired by similar rugs in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. However, the design is essentially Persianate, with a field design of palmettes and arabesques, and birds in the spandrels above the niche. The stunning borders, dominated by cartouches with calligraphic blessings and prayers. The overall composition is supremely elegant. Wonderful colouring adds to the attractiveness, from the glowing sapphire blue in the field, to the golds, greens reds and pinks in the details. Cherished through the generations and sold from a private collection where it had been hanging for some 30 years, it has survived in excellent condition. Recent cleaning has brought out the brightness of the colours. This is a masterful silk rug.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th century Turkish silk prayer rugs feature a central mihrab or arch motif inspired by Islamic architecture, flanked by calligraphic cartouches and curvilinear floral arabesques. Traditional weaving centres such as Hereke and Kayseri used high knot density to produce crisp geometric and botanical details.

These rugs are hand-knotted using silk yarns for both the pile and the underlying foundation warp and weft. Silk construction enables weavers to achieve high knots per square inch, creating intricate patterns, defined borders, and a smooth tactile finish.

Authentic silk rugs demonstrate a distinct colour directional shift when viewed from opposite ends due to the sheen and angle of the pile. Examination of the reverse side will reveal clear pattern definition and hand-knotted structural variations along the edges and fringes.

A silk rug can be placed in low-traffic areas as a central floor focus or mounted onto a wall frame as a decorative textile hanging. The ochre, navy, and gold palette coordinates with dark wood furniture, polished brass fixtures, and neutral upholstered seats.

Silk rugs must be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading and positioned away from high footfall. Professional dry cleaning or specialist hand-washing is required, as standard rotary vacuums and water-based spot cleaners can break down silk fibres.
