Antique Georgian Solid Silver Toast Rack in Neoclassical Design - Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard 1809

18th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this splendid and stylistically juxtaposing Georgian solid silver toast rack made in London 1809 with marks of Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard.

At first glance, even to the seasoned collector, this rack may appear contemporary, modern and post-20th century, however, upon closer inspection it is in fact quite the contrary and a unique example of Georgian neoclassical silverware.

A closer look at the hallmarks, neoclassical feet and scrolled handles, reveals that it is indeed not modern, yet from a general perspective, this toast rack presents an impressively avant-garde and 'futuristic' design for its age.

Such contrast of period and style certainly makes this piece a unique addition whether amongst other antique wares of the same period or perhaps as a slight aesthetic deception in a modern interior setting.

Why not indulge in an exceptionally stylish way to enjoy breakfast in the morning and perhaps entertain some guests by having them guess its age; we suspect not many people would imagine such a design is over 200 years old!

The rack is hallmarked with English marks on the reverse side of the base/border.

SIZE

Size (cm) L:18.5cm W:8.5cm H:13.5cm

Size (inches) L:7.28 W:3.34 H:5.31

Weight: 242 grams (7.78 Troy oz)

CONDITION

Restored Condition - The toast rack is in a restored antique condition. Unfortunately due to its fine neoclassical design and the fact that such wares were indeed practically used, it has suffered some breaks and splits over the years which have been restored (old repairs, shown in the last photos).

Whilst we would normally hesitate to present pieces in such condition, we have decided to offer this piece due to its very unique and historically juxtaposing design. We believe such items should certainly be kept (as opposed to melted) as an example of non-conforming aesthetics and a time capsule of everyday life of a bygone era. The toast rack still stands and holds all 6 slices of toast with no practical issues other than some overall fragility.

Please refer to the photographs to examine the condition in further detail.
