Wonderful Japanese porcelain censer Kutani for incense, koro, in the form of a treasure ship, Takarabune, Meiji period (1868-1913) Japan.
The censer is boldly modelled in the shape of the legendary Takarabune, or Treasure Ship, a mythical ship that is said to be carried across the sky in the early days of the New Year by the Shichifukujin, the Seven Lucky Gods who visit fortunate people to bring them blessings and prosperity.
The single-masted ship floats on the water, its sail filled with wind and decorated with the character . The ship''s pierced top serves as a lid for a censer. It is laden with magical objects and treasures.
The ship is made of porcelain and covered with beautiful enamel in black, green, red, blue and yellow colours, with gilding all over the surface.
There is a hieroglyph on the underside of the ship and the lid
