Description

A good Gentlemans Writing Box made from Kingwood and bound in steel by famous box manufacturer, Edwards, of 21 King Street, Bloomsbury Square, London. There is an original Edwards label inside the box.

The lid opens to reveal the two-section leather writing surface and a pen and ink section. There is a lift-out tray between the two inkwells with storage underneath. Beneath the hinged upper leather writing surface there is a further and full width lift-out mahogany tray with sprung brass handles, under which is a paper storage space. Lift out the left-hand inkwell and press on the pressure point on the side wall and a spring-loaded panel pops-out revealing three small 'secret drawers' behind. These were often used for valuable/personal/private items.

Both sections of the leather writing surface open. The lower section by means of small sliding 'bolts' which opens to reveal further paper storage. It is this space that criss-cross ribbon storage and the Edwards label can be found.

Both leather writing surfaces are original have gilt-tooled and embossed decoration around the circumference, with decorative brass fittings and hinges. There are two original ink bottles and a working key.
