Horse And Groom Early 18th Century Dutch German Equestrian Master Johan Noah Bemmel (1716-1758) Drawing On Paper

£410    $549    €469
A wonderful early hand drawing of a horse and his groom. He groom is well hidden - we only see a leg and the top of his cap!

It is a work by Johann Noah von Bemmel, an artist of Dutch ancestry who was born in Nuremberg in 1716. He was the son of artist Johann Georg von Bemmel (1669-1723) and the grandson of Willem van Bemmel (1630-1708), an important Dutch painter and engraver who ended his life in Nuremberg and thus ''initiated a dynasty of Bavarian painters'' (two of Johann Nah Bemmel''s sons also become artists).

Johann Noah was initially taught by his father, then studied at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts under Johann Daniel Preissler and Johann Martin Schuster. He subsequently continued training as a portraitist with the Czech painter Jan Kupecky. He passed away aged only 42. A number of prints after works by Johann Noah Bemmel are in the British Museum.

Our very fine drawing was drawn in two inks, black and sepia, and heightened with greenish ink wash or watercolou...
