Still Life with Shell, Bottle and Feather - Oil on Canvas, 19th Century - Unsigned.

19th century
Description

Here is an supremely opulent and striking still life oil on canvas painting, featuring a shell, cranberry glass perfume bottle, Chinese tea cup and peacock feather - all set against a golden silk backdrop and emerald green wall.

The colours are incredibly rich and vibrant, all set off by the golden hue of the frame.

Painted by an accomplished hand, the use of light, and the highlights that the artist has picked out - from the reflection of the window in the glass of the scent bottle, to the ridges of the shell, all bring this painting to life.

The painting displays beautifully, but has the expected surface wear and craquelure of an oil painting of this age, but as I hope the photographs show, this doesn't distract at all and the painting really draws the eye in and captivates the viewer. Please study the photographs so that you may see.

The painting measures 42cm by 38cm framed, and the canvas 26cm by 22cm.

Please do nit hesitate to get in touch if I can offer any further information or photographs.

I offer free postage across mainland UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century still life painting focuses on the detailed arrangement of everyday objects, natural elements, and domestic tableware to explore light, shadow, and material textures.

Artists typically used oil-based pigments applied to natural flax or linen canvas, stretched across wooden stretcher bars, and framed in moulded gilt wood.

Authentic period paintings feature natural surface craquelure, age-related darkening on the reverse of the canvas, and hand-carved or cast plaster ornaments on the frame.

Display the artwork above a console table or lean it against a wall on open shelving to create visual depth and a contrast with modern furnishings.

Dust the surface and frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, keeping the painting away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources.
