Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, scent bottles became quintessential dressing table accessories for wealthy households. Skilled silversmiths and glassmakers collaborated to produce decorative vessels, combining cut lead crystal with hallmarked sterling silver mounts.

Victorian scent bottles were typically constructed from hand-cut lead crystal or blown glass, often featuring coloured casing such as cranberry or pink glass. Tops and collars were commonly crafted from sterling silver, silver plate, or brass, decorated with repousse floral or scroll patterns.

Authentic pieces generally display official silver hallmarks on the collar or cap, indicating the maker, purity, assay office, and year date. The glass will show signs of hand-cutting, faceted necks, hand-finished bases, and minor natural wear consistent with age.

Place a pair of glass scent bottles on a marble bathroom tray, a mirrored vanity unit, or a bedroom dressing table to capture natural light. Grouping them alongside books or trinket dishes creates a curated decorative focal point.

Clean the glass body using warm water and mild soap, taking care not to submerge silver mounts. Polish the sterling silver caps gently with a soft cotton cloth and silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage delicate embossing.
