Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, major French urban centres transitioned from oil illumination to gas lighting, prompting the installation of standardized copper lanterns. Crafted by municipal metalsmiths, these structures were engineered to withstand outdoor weather conditions while maintaining clear light output.

Traditional street lanterns were primarily constructed from sheet copper, bronze, and wrought iron due to their resistance to corrosion. Hand-blown or moulded clear glass panels were fitted to protect the flame from wind while allowing maximum illumination.

Authentic period street lanterns display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as riveted joints, rolled copper edges, and natural surface oxidisation or patina. Original glass elements often feature subtle imperfections, thickness variations, or air bubbles characteristic of historic glassmaking techniques.

Antique copper street lanterns are frequently converted for electrical use and suspended as pendant lights in double-height foyers, stairwells, or kitchen islands. Their scale and warm metallic tones provide architectural interest when integrated into contemporary or restored period schemes.

Preserving original copper lighting involves gentle dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that strip natural patina. Glass shades should be cleaned using a mild solution of warm water and pH-neutral soap applied with a soft microfibre towel.
