This large and boldly decorated late 19th century Chinese red pottery Yixing pair of vases are in perfect condition. They stand on a plain straight foot and have a bulbous lower section which gradually tapers to their rims. These fine examples have been decorated by hand in the wet clay before firing. This process is to carve and pierce the wonderfully detailed design of exotic flowers and foliage. This is highly skilled work as it can be very problematic from the possibility of collapse whilst in particular cutting the reticulated piercing work through the wet clay. The carving is exceptionally deep and bold and very pleasing to the eye. Both vases have an impressed character mark on their bases. There are slight differences in their width and depth as these vases are completely handmade.
