We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Arts and Crafts coal scuttle, often called a purdonium, is a fireside storage container made from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. These pieces combine wooden frames with hand-crafted decorative metalwork panels designed to store fuel near a domestic hearth.

Coal scuttles from this period were predominantly constructed using mahogany, oak, or walnut for the outer cabinet, lined with galvanised zinc or iron insert buckets. Decorative front panels and handles were frequently cast or embossed in brass or copper.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned wooden components, hand-repousse or embossed metalwork panels, and dovetailed joinery. Natural motifs such as flora, fauna, and stylised natural forms were characteristic design elements of the movement.

An antique coal scuttle can be positioned beside a fireplace or wood burner to store logs, kindling, or fire-lighting supplies. Alternatively, these decorative wooden containers can serve as unique side storage in living rooms or hallways.

Clean wooden surfaces using a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the patination. Brass panels should be dusted regularly, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that strip historical oxidisation or damage adjacent woodwork.
