Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror from this era is typically wide in proportion, designed specifically to hang above a fireplace mantle, and features birds eye maple veneer characterized by small, swirling figure patterns reminiscent of bird eyes, often paired with gilded or classical architectural mouldings.

These mirrors feature a solid timber substratefrequently pine or oakveneered with birds eye maple, alongside cast gesso or turned wood mouldings finished with water gilding using gold leaf, and mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit genuine hand-cut timber backboards, natural age-related oxidisation or foxing to the original mirror plate, subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing reddish-brown clay bole beneath, and natural variation in the timber veneer.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace hearth, console table, or sideboard to act as an architectural focal point, pairing its warm honey tones with neutral wall palettes, brass accents, and structured greenery.

Clean the veneer gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain; avoid water or solvent cleaners on gilded areas as moisture can dissolve the traditional animal-glue size underlying the gold leaf.
