Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique oak settle is a high-backed wooden bench, traditionally crafted in the 17th and 18th centuries across Britain and Western Europe. Designed originally to shield sitters from draughts in entrance halls and near fireplaces, settles typically feature solid timber construction and panelled backrests.

Early 18th-century settles were primarily constructed using native hardwoods such as English oak. Construction relies on traditional joinery techniques, including hand-cut mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, alongside fielded panel backrests and hand-turned leg supports.

Authentic period settles feature physical indications of age such as uneven wear on lower stretchers, hand-planed surface textures, and peg joinery. The back of the rear panels typically reveals unplaned timber and natural shrinkage gaps consistent with centuries of wood drying.

A period oak settle functions effectively in entryways, wide corridors, or dining spaces as accent seating. Interior schemes often pair the dark timber with neutral upholstery, textured linen cushions, or clean architectural lines to balance the visual weight of the wood.

To maintain historic oak furniture, ensure stable indoor humidity and place the piece away from direct radiator heat or constant sunlight. Treat the timber periodically with a high-quality natural beeswax polish applied with a soft cloth to protect the surface patination.
