This fine and highly attractive portrait from the British Regency period demonstrates very clearly the artist’s ability to convey not just a likeness but also a sense of the character of the young gentleman. The sitter wears a scarlet frock coat with buff stand collar over a white linen shirt with a sheer frill down the front. The fringed gold epaulettes worn on his shoulders, denote his rank, which is probably that of lieutenant colonel in the British Army. He has been portrayed in an informal manor, seated at a table and holding a book, and his coat unbuttoned.
This type of portrait was very popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries and there were many artists working in this lucrative area for private commissions but also public display such as town halls, etc.
The work shows the influence of the British schools and it is comparable on stylistic and compositional grounds to that of Ramsay Richard Reinagle.
Ramsay Richard Reinagle was born in London in 1775. Ramsay was instructed by his father and was a painter of landscapes, portraits and sporting subjects and exhibited at the Royal Academy as early as 1788. In 1805 he was elected an associate of the Society of Painters in Watercolours and in 1806 a full member becoming its treasurer in 1807 and its president 1808-1812. His work is in the FitzWilliam Museum, Cambridge and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. His youngest son, George Philip Reinagle was also a painter.
