Description

A rare large Old Sheffield Plated coffee pot. Bearing unattributed first generation marks and dating to c1765. Of bulbous form with a turned wooden handle and stylised finial and spout. Visible internal and external seams.

The condition is good overall. With one small dent to the body and slight copper bleed to the raised edges of the base and lid. The handle has an old solder repair but otherwise this is still a great survivor.

Old Sheffield Plate is a technique discovered in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, involving the thermal fusing of a layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets. This method allowed craftsmen to produce silver-surfaced tableware and hollowware at a fraction of the cost of solid sterling silver during the Georgian period.

Pots from this era were raised by hand-hammering fused silver and copper sheets into form. Components such as spouts, footrings, and finials were cast separately and soldered into place, while heat-resistant materials like carved ebony, fruitwood, or stained wood were selected for handles to ensure comfortable pouring.

Authentic pieces typically show double-skin construction where the silver layer wraps over copper edges, visible seam lines from hand assembly, and maker marks that differ from standard sterling hallmarks. Minor copper show-through, known as bleeding, often appears on raised areas due to historical polishing.
