Description

C19th Italian Venetian carved wood polychrome-decorated candlestand figure ‘blackamoor’ figure of a gondolier.

The flamboyantly and richly-dressed male nubian figure depicted stood upon the prow of a floating gondola holding a decorated oar whilst the raised arm holds aloft a tazza as a candlestand. The vessel resting on a naturalistically-modelled wavy water base , portraying the canals of Venice .

The figure and the water-borne gondola raised on a simulated faux porphyry stepped plinth base with decorative faux marble and gilded mouldings, the whole mounted on carved claw feet .

A stylish addition for a period interior scheme in good original condition with only minor historic damage and minimal losses to polychrome painted decoration .
