Here is a super English coastal scene, likely of the East coast- full of life and vibrancy, signed by the 19th century painter Lennard Lewis RA.
The sun is casting its final golden rays over a frothy blue sea, as sea birds swirl over the returning boats and the harbour buzzes with life.
I really like this painting for its colour and detail - a snapshot of busy Victorian coastal life, fishing drifters, a paddle-steamer tug pulling a clipper in, to join the others who''s masts tantalisingly appear over the harbour wall - rowing boats, fishing smacks and an array of sailors and fishermen.
A beacon stands on top of the cliffs, ready to guide the ships to safety.
Lennard Lewis was born in London in 1826 and went on to become a Watercolourist specialising in English landscapes, and in particular coastal scenes. A well received artist, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Grosvenor Gallery and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, as well as exhibiting works in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.
The painting is in good condition with bright string colours, and comes in its glazed gilded frame, measuring 72cm by 42cm, the actual image 53cm by 22cm.
