New Zealand Native Timber Table in the Manner of Anton Seuffer

19th century
For Sale by Moxhams Antiques
Description

Late 19th century New Zealand native timber inlaid table in the manner of Anton Seuffert, the octagonal top with various show woods in the form of stars: the indigenous woods probably include kauri, mangeao, towai and rimu on a rewarewa ground; on turned oak legs and castors.

Christies sold a very fine table with a similar top by Anton Seuffert lot 232 19/03/2020.

Tables I've seen by Seuffert have had very fine tripod bases; there are no marks under the top that would suggest the top had ever had a different base so it's possible Seuffert made the top and the base, judging by it's style and signs of age, was made for it in England in the same 1870s period.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These tables feature geometric marquetry or parquetry patterns created using various native wood veneers. Historically produced during the late Victorian era, they showcase decorative craftsmanship through central starburst or geometric medallions on octagonal or round tops.

Craftsmen utilise a solid wood frame with fine veneers of contrasting timber species glued to the surface to form geometric motifs. Legs are typically turned or carved, often joined by cross-stretchers and finished with small brass or wooden castors for mobility.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display natural hand-cut veneer variations, original hide glue residue under magnification, and natural shrinkage or minor cracking along joinery lines over time. Hardware such as period castors and hand-turned leg profiles also indicate age.

Position the piece as an accent or side table beside a clean-lined sofa or armchair to create visual contrast. The rich timber tones and geometric marquetry complement modern minimalist decor as well as classic heritage interiors.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to preserve the original finish.
