Description

Chinese ‘Wucai’ porcelain jar and cover, Shunzhi Period, 1644-1661. The baluster shaped jar, hand painted in famille verte enamels, with a large, auspicious Golden Pheasant perched on a large, underglaze blue painted hollow rock, amongst a profusion of flowering plants.

The reverse painted with smaller birds in flight above rocks and plants.

Having an iron red whorl motif to the shoulder, within concentric circles, beneath a short nrck, painted with a continuous band of flowering scrollwork.

The flat foot left unglazed, apart from a tiny area to the centre.

Retaining its original cover, painted with iron red flower heads, amongst green scrolling vine. Surmounted with a bun finial.

Height – 35.5 cm, 14”.

Diameter – 25 cm, 9 7/8”.

Condition – Professional restoration to a section of the rim. Glaze flake to the finial. Typical age related minor wear to the overglaze enamels.
