Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Andirons, also known as fire dogs, were designed to hold wooden logs off the bottom of a hearth to improve air circulation and combustion. During the 17th to 19th centuries, highly ornate brass fronts were introduced to reflect firelight and showcase the wealth and taste of the household.

Traditional firedogs combine decorative cast or wrought brass fronts with heavy cast iron rear billets. The iron billet rests inside the firebox to withstand direct heat, while the brass facade remains on the hearth for display.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-finishing, such as subtle variations in casting, hand-cut screw threads, and heavy iron shafts. Oxidation, heat discoloration on the rear iron, and genuine age-related wear to the brass undersides also indicate authenticity.

Position them inside an open masonry fireplace or within a decorative chimneypiece alcove. They can also serve as freestanding sculptural accents alongside modern wood-burning stoves or inactive decorative hearths.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina. A light application of microcrystalline wax protects the metal from tarnish while preserving its natural aged finish.
