A Framed Portrait of a Gentleman

1900 - 1920
Description

A late Victorian or early Edwardian portrait of a rather intense young Gentleman. The features of the face and eyes well executed the remainder rather abstract. The medium is difficult to ascertain but it appears to be oil on canvas paper on a continental style inner frame mounted within an ornate gilt frame. The frame is in generally good condition with all the molding intact. There is a small repair to the inner gilt slip in the bottom left hand corner. The unsigned painting itself has some scratches and scuffs and has some charm due to the subjects expression.

Frame dimensions are 61 cm wide by 70 high the exposed image being 38.5 cm by 48.5 cm

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian male portraits typically showcase sitters in formal contemporary attire, often seated against subdued, dark backgrounds to highlight facial features and posture. The artistic approach favours realistic rendering, subtle lighting, and restrained color palettes to convey social status and dignified composure.

Paintings from this era were primarily executed using oil pigments mixed with natural drying oils onto linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretchers. Frames were commonly constructed from carved wood or composite gesso with gold leaf finishing.

Authentic period works display natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, consistent reverse-side patina on the canvas and stretcher, and appropriate period frame construction. Oxidation or darkening of the varnish layer is also typical over extended periods.

An antique portrait can serve as a focal point above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or integrated into a gallery wall alongside contemporary artwork. Pairing classic oil paintings with minimalist or dark academia aesthetics creates visual contrast and depth.

Paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent canvas warping and paint flaking. Dusting should be performed gently with a soft dry brush, while surface cleaning and varnish removal should strictly be undertaken by a professional restorer.
