The bright-cut oval body is the perfect size to house a nutmeg. The bright-cut domed pull-off cover opens to reveal the original steel grater. The base with pull-off cover. The lid hallmarked with maker's marks. The inner base fully hallmarked. The base initialled. It is a wonderful and complete example.

from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.
