Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The set is housed in the original fitted oak case that is lined with royal blue silk and felt. The interior of the lid is gilded with the Mappin & Webb Royal Warrant under a crown: "Mappin & Webb, silversmiths to the Queen, Sheffield & London". The pieces are marked "Princes' plate Rd 71552", denoting a particularly high standard of silvering.

The lid has a vacant brass shield cartouche, so this set can be engraved and personalised as a present.
