Splendid Japanese Meiji (late 19thC) Black & Gold Lacquer Rectangular Letter Box (Fubako). Decorated in gold and slight coloured takamaki-e with highlights of e-nashiji and kirikane with a large ho-o (Japanese phoenix) bird among paulownia about to alight, reserved on a roiro-nuri ground. The inside is decorated in rich nashiji, the inside of the lid lacquered in gold takamaki-e with a clump of flowering chrysanthemums, two sides of the box with gilt-metal fittings of a circular engraved roundel attached with a loose ring handle incorporating the cord. Comes with original lacquered wooden storage box. Measures 26.5cm x 11.5cm x 6cm (10 3/8in x 4½in x 2 3/8in).
