Japanese Edo (mid-19thC) Lacquered-Bamboo Pipecase (Kiseruzutsu) by Kosai. Of muso-zutsu form, decorated in gold, red and silver takamaki-e with Hotei holding his head with both hands and leaning against his treasure sack. The rim is gold. Signed Kosai in gold lacquer within a black-lacquer reserve. Measures 22.5cm (8 7/8in) long x 2.7mm (1in) wide.
