Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Sutherland table is a compact variation of a drop-leaf table featuring a very narrow central top section and deep hinged leaves supported by pivoted legs. Named after the Duchess of Sutherland, this style emerged during the mid-19th century to accommodate space-saving requirements in Victorian drawing rooms.

These tables were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, finished with traditional French polish. Construction features include finely turned spindle legs, rule joints along the table flap edges, and pivoted gate-legs resting on brass castors for mobility.

Genuine 19th-century examples display period-correct brass or iron castors, hand-finished joinery, and authentic wear around the pivots and feet. Look for rule joints along the hinged drop-leaf edges and original timber patination rather than modern uniform finishes or machine screws.

Positioned beside an armchair or sofa, a Sutherland table functions as a versatile side table that expands when required for entertaining. When folded, its narrow profile allows it to fit neatly into tight alcoves or serve as a slim console table.

Clean the wooden surface regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals or water-based cleaning agents. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish and maintain the smooth operation of the hinged leaves.
