The Cefnbrith Cupboard

19th century
Description

A Welsh wall cupboard, unusually of beechwood with a warm, fruitwood-like colour, fitted with an internal drawer below two adjustable shelves and enclosed by a single glazed door with an elaborate pattern of glazing bars. Breconshire/Carmarthenshire, circa 1840-60.

Provenance:

Cefnbrith, a farm near Llangamarch in northwest Breconshire is generally considered to be the birthplace of John Penry, the Puritan martyr. Born in 1563, educated at Cambridge and Oxford, he was hanged for sedition in 1593. It wasnt until the 19th century though, and the emergence of Nonconformity as a powerful force in the culture and politics of Wales, that John Penry became a Nonconformist and Welsh hero and, in turn, Cefnbrith a site of pilgrimage. David Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, visited in 1913. To mark the occasion, the Williams family, tenants at Cefnbrith, provided a visitors book which he signed.

The display cupboard formed part of the dispersal sale of the contents of the house which took place in October 2018 when the Williams family relinquished their tenancy of Cefnbrith after more than 150 years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A glazed wall cupboard is a wall-mounted storage unit featuring glass-panelled doors designed for the safe display of valued items.

Georgian wall cupboards were typically constructed using native woods such as oak, pine, or fruitwood, fitted with hand-blown glass panes and hand-turned wooden knobs or brass fittings.

Authentic eighteenth-century cabinets display hand-cut dovetail joints, slight irregularities in the hand-drawn glass panes, original hand-forged hinges, and natural wear around the keyhole or door handle.

Position the cabinet on a neutral or painted wall to highlight its timber tones, using the internal shelves to display ceramic vessels, glassware, or curated books.

Dust the timber regularly with a microfibre cloth, clean the glass with water and a soft cloth without harsh detergents, and apply natural beeswax once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish.
