A Silver and Copper Alloy Figure of Vishnu. Java,12th/13th Century.

Pre 16th century
Description

An excellent and rare Majapahit silver bronze sculpture of Vishnu from central Java and dating circa 13th century.

Silver bronzes were made from a silver bronze alloy where silver is substituted for zinc in the alloy mix, resulting in this unique silver colored metal. This is an exceptionally rare rendering of Vishnu in that it includes his mount, Garuda on the front of the base (socle).

This indicates a strong influence of the north-east Indian sculptural traditions.

In addition, Vishnu is rendered with his other attributes, namely the Sankha, or conch shell, a Cakra disk and a club (gada). The early bronze sculptures made in Java were highly inspired by bronzes brought to Java by early traders from southern India.

During the Majapahit Dynasty, Hinduism and Buddhism merged and they were each equally practiced. As with most all early Javanese bronzes this is cast in the lost wax method with additional details added by chasing and chiseling techniques. The detailing seen on this masterpiece is most exceptional and of the highest quality. Please refer to our detail photos and in particular the detail of Vishnu’s hand holding the Sankha.

The superb delicacy and grace of his fingers speaks for itself. This silver bronze sculpture is in excellent original condition and with a superb original patina. The patina is especially appealing in that it has some hues of turquoise.

This museum quality silver bronze is 23 cm just over 9 inches in height. It weighs just shy of 1.45 kilograms or just over three pounds.

It is a genuine 13th century sculpture as are all these items in my collection..

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During this period in Java, bronze and copper alloy castings were heavily influenced by Hindu-Buddhist iconography, featuring elaborate aureoles, multi-armed deities, and detailed royal crowns.

Craftsmen typically utilised lost-wax casting methods using copper alloys, bronze, and occasionally silver or gold alloys to achieve detailed iconography and structural stability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural surface oxidisation, casting seam lines, detailed iconographic attributes such as specific hand gestures, and typical prabhamandala halos.

Placing a historical metal sculpture on a minimalist console table, sideboard, or styled shelf highlights its silhouette against neutral walls while adding textural contrast.

Dust the surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive polishes that could strip the natural historical patina.
