Antique Regency Ormolu Single Fusee Mantel Clock Timepiece William Hardy London.
This stunning antique regency mantel clock has a round stunning red veneer with a beautiful rich colour. The top of the case is then round and houses the movement perfectly. The case then has a shaped support for the round section which has two lovely gilt ormolu mounts. This then leads to the rectangular body of the case which has a further gilt ormolu mount to the front. Finally the case is finished by a moulding to the bottom edge and four beautiful shaped feet. The clock then sits on a lovely marble base which is finished by a further four round brass feet.
The dial is then gilt and set out in black Roman numerals. It then has a ring of small dots each marking a minute. The centre of the dial is then beautifully engine turned with a fantastic pattern. Finally the dial is finished by two intricately shaped hands as well as a beautifully shaped bezel.
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It is a single fusee example of the upmost quality and is working perfectly. The movement also comes complete with its regulating pendulum and winding key. The movement is also signed to the back “Hardy London” to show that the clock was made by William Hardy.
“Derek Roberts, English Precision Pendulum Clocks, Schiffer, 2003, pp. 83-93, figs. 16-17A-E
William Hardy was a Scotsman who is believed to have arrived in London in about 1800, settled in 29 Coldbath Square, Farringdon, near Clerkenwell and set himself up as a watch and chronometer maker. He made various presentations to the Society of Arts including one on ''a compensating balance'' and another on ''the arcs of vibrations in timekeepers''. Hardy was certainly a very fine craftsman; a chronometer by him was noted by a sea captain, William Brown, as having been taken on a voyage from Liverpool to Cape de Verd on the coast of Africa. He discovered it had varied by no more than one second.”
