Originating in 18th-century France, the gueridon is a small, round occasional table designed to support lamps, candleholders, or light refreshments. During the Louis XVI and Neoclassical periods, makers frequently decorated these tables with geometric parquetry wood veneers, brass galleries, and cast metal mounts.

These tables are typically constructed using timber frames overlaid with fine wood veneers, such as walnut, tulipwood, or kingwood, arranged in geometric geometric parquetry patterns. Additional features include cast brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, decorative festoons, and pierced gallery rims.

Authentic period or late 19th-century revival pieces feature hand-cut timber veneers fitted in geometric arrangements, hand-chased metal castings, and period-correct fixings under the top frame. Natural age oxidation on the underside of timber and patina on the brass mounts are key structural indicators.
