Dutch Marquetry Chest

18th century
For Sale by Moxhams Antiques
Description

An attractive figured walnut Dutch chest with fine marquetry inlay of birds and flowers; most Dutch chests we have had previously have had bombay fronts and often ball and claw feet but I really like this more unusual serpentine shape and top and the splay feet. These chest are thought to be 18th century with 19th century inlay. Oak lined drawers and in fair condition for its age.

circa 1780 with the inlay done about 1840

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dutch marquetry furniture is characterised by intricate wood inlays, often depicting floral motifs, urns, birds, and scrollwork. Originating prominently in the 17th and 18th centuries, craftspeople used contrasting timber veneers to create ornate pictorial designs across cabinet surfaces and drawer fronts.

These chests typically feature an oak or pine carcass, overlaid with thin veneers of walnut, fruitwood, sycamore, or holly. Drawer construction traditionally utilizes hand-cut dovetail joints, accompanied by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneers with slight variations in thickness, natural shrinkage lines along grain directions, and hand-forged iron or brass hardware. The interior drawer lining and back panels should show original hand-planed woodwork and aged patina rather than uniform modern timber.

A marquetry chest serves as a focal accent piece when placed in a hallway, living room, or bedroom. Pairing the detailed woodwork with neutral walls, contemporary minimalist lighting, and modern abstract art balances the ornate decorative pattern.

Maintain marquetry by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber movement.
