Edwin Hughes, The Blacksmith - Antique Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brave Fine Art

This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Edwin Hughes (1842-1922) depicts a blacksmith holding a horseshoe while conversing with a gentleman through a window. His assistant works at the forge.

Edwin Hughes was an accomplished genre painter known for his charming portrayals of Victorian life and ‘costume paintings’ with historical references - an optimistic suitor offers a white rose to a demure young lady, a ragged middle-aged gentleman dozes off following a day of toil, and 18th-century aristocrats share a cordial greeting.

Working from London, he exhibited 16 times at the Royal Academy between 1872 and 1892. His father was a picture dealer.

A familiar scene from a bygone age. How many tools can you spot?

Signed/dated and held within a splendid baroque revival gilt frame with extensive ornamentation.
