C19th large pair of naive painted wall plaques / dummy boards; in the Brighton Pavilion style with original paint; each pine board in the form of five graduating pagodas with flared roofs above arched lattice doors and windows. The base with shaped plinths and a flight of steps. The reverse having the original inset metal brackets for hanging. Retaining the original charming colourful decoration.

Brighton Pavilion style originates from the early 19th-century Regency period, heavily inspired by the exotic Chinoiserie and Indian-influenced interiors commissioned for the Prince Regents seaside palace in Brighton.

These decorative pieces were typically shaped from solid timber boards, prepared with a gesso ground, and decorated by hand using paint pigments before being sealed with varnish.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural craquelure across painted surfaces, wear around the edges, hand-sawn timber backing, and historic oxidisation of original paints.
