Rare Antique Victorian Walnut Hollow Barley Twist 6 Tier Whatnot Display Shelf

19th century
Description

A Rare Victorian 6 tier Barley Twist Whatnot.

A Lovely Walnut Whatnot.

We bring to you the most outstanding example of a mid Victorian Walnut 6 tier Whatnot which is believed to be made around C1860. This absolutely stunning Whatnot is in fantastic original condition which we have just enhanced by sympathetically cleaning and carefully waxing to its lovely sheen.

The Whatnot has a finely fret-worked top pediment which stands proudly above its 3 tier descending mirror back which is complete with its original glass with very little foxing for its age. The Whatnot has 6 serpentine shaped display shelves in total with a fretwork apron to follow along the underside of each shelf which is supported by the most exquisitely crafted hollow barley twist turned supports. The Whatnot has lovely turned finials to the top portion and stands proudly on its lovely turned legs.

The display stand is made of the highest quality featuring its original glazed French polished finish and t here is no excessive movement or play in any of the joints, the tops are flat without bowing or twisting.

There is one brass plate bracket to the rear (later addition) which we recommend is fixed to a wall with one screw just to ensure the item cannot fall if it is accidentally knocked.

Please note this item is in beautiful condition for its age as shown in the photographs below however being an antique there may be minor repairs and imperfections here and there. However, we feel that these points are which adds charm and character to a piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A whatnot is a piece of 19th-century furniture featuring open shelves supported by turned posts, designed to display ornaments, books, and curiosities. Popular during the Victorian era, these items were commonly placed in drawing rooms to display personal collections.

Victorian whatnots were typically crafted from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Construction often involved decorative woodturning, such as barley twist or spiral-turned supports, along with fretwork cresting and occasional mirror-backed panels.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature period construction techniques, including hand-carved details, original wood grain variations, and naturally aged patination. Look for hollow or solid barley twist turnings, dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joints, and period-correct mirror glass.

A Victorian whatnot can be styled in modern homes by mixing antique ceramics, small potted plants, and modern art books on its open shelves. Placing it in a hallway, living room corner, or alcove creates vertical interest without overpowering smaller rooms.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage and fading. Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the wood finish.
