Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sedan chair is an enclosed cabin supported by long wooden poles, designed to carry a single passenger through urban streets via human porters. Popular across Europe throughout the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, they allowed wealthy individuals to travel comfortably while avoiding unpaved roads.

These vehicles were typically constructed from lightweight timber frames covered with painted wood or leather. Decorators embellished the exteriors with carved giltwood moldings and lined the interior cabins with rich textiles such as damask, silk, or velvet.

Authentic nineteenth-century Italian examples feature hand-carved Rococo scrollwork, period iron upholstery tacks, and original metal pole brackets. Evidence of age includes natural surface wear around hand-contact points and historical oxidation on gilded details.

In contemporary settings, sedan chairs serve as dramatic sculptural statement pieces rather than functional seating. Interior designers often position them as theatrical focal points in large foyers, galleried hallways, or open-plan living areas.

Keep gilded and painted timber pieces away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood movement and flaking. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush without applying water or chemical cleaners.
