Description

A French 18 karat (18K) yellow gold love charm pendant with a rebus spelling out "Plus qu'hier, moins que demain" ("More than yesterday, less than tomorrow") - a line taken from the love poem written by Rosemonde Gerard to her husband (the author of Cyrano) in 1889.

The word "plus" is symbolised by a plus sign, and the word "moins" by a minus sign.

This is a later example of the tokens created by Alphonse Augis in 1907 in response to the poem, signed A.Augis. with a "crepe de chine" textured background and floral and laurel wreath border to indicate the triumph of love. With the patent mark "DEPOSE" to the reverse.

Signed A.Augis, stamped with the eagle’s head for 18K gold and French manufacture and Augis' maker's mark.

Created by Lyon jeweller Alphonse Augis in 1907, the medallion incorporates lines from Rosemonde Gerards 1889 poem LEternelle Chanson. The design features + and - mathematical symbols representing the phrase + quhier - que demain, translating to more than yesterday, less than tomorrow.

These medals are traditionally crafted in 18ct yellow gold using die-stamped techniques. The design frequently features small synthetic or natural rubies and diamond accents to form the mathematical symbols, framed by decorative borders such as laurel wreaths.

Authentic pieces feature the makers mark A.A or the full Augis signature along with official French gold hallmarks, such as the Eagles Head for 18ct gold. The engraving and border detailing display crisp, high-relief metalwork.
