John White, The Big One - Antique Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brave Fine Art

This late 19th-century oil painting by Scottish artist John White (1851-1933) depicts a boy fishing in a stream with the sea beyond.

With his line taut, he leans back and looks optimistically towards, what he hopes could be, ''The Big One''. A young girl sits alongside, a little less interested in the escalating drama. It’s a charming scene highlighting the simplicity of childhood amid a radiant natural environment.

John White hailed from Edinburgh but soon settled in Devon following a short time in Australia. He produced numerous works depicting the South-West, such as ‘Fish Sellers in Clovelly’, and ‘Branscombe Beach, East Devon’, so it’s plausible that this is also a view in Cornwall or Devon.

It was completed in 1886, the same year he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He married his wife Rosetta, two years later.

Signed/dated lower right and held within a gilt frame, which is probably original.
